Social networks have come a long way since the implementation of the idea several years ago.

Now you can do so much more with a social network than just meet people and send messages. You can create photo albums, add videos, listen to your favorite music, find old friends and so much more. Even the profile pages have evolved. Many social networks let you change the colors of your profile and even add backgrounds and change the layout.

1. Meet New People

This is the main reason social networks were created, so people can meet and find new friends. On just about every social networking site you can browse the network and meet new people. You can find people of every kind from all over the world. Or you can just focus on meeting certain types of new friends.

Find friends in a certain niche or make as many friends as you can. How you do it is up to you. Everyone had their own way of making online friends.

2. Find Old Friends

You’ve probably lost contact with someone in your life. Now’s your chance to find them again. Could be a friend from high school, someone you used to work with, or just about anyone. Using social networking sites you can type in the name of your friends and find them, if they’re on that site.

More of your friends are on social networks than you realize. Join up, create a profile and start your search. When you create your profile, don’t forget to mention all the schools you went to so your friends can find you too.

3. Chat the Day Away

Most social networks have forums. This is where you can post your thoughts, questions and opinions. It’s also where you can communicate with a group of friends that all have the same interest or problem. There’s usually a variety of forums to choose from. Which forum you post in all depends on what you’re looking for.

If you’re looking to discuss a certain topic, then you would post in the forum that’s set up for that particular topic. If you’re looking for help with something then you’d post in the support forum. Maybe you’re just looking for a discussion to get into, browse around and find something you like, then join in.

4. Join Interest Groups

Many social networks offer groups. If they don’t have a group you like, you can usually create one of your own. Groups are just that, groups of people. They all joined the group because they all had something in common.

There can be groups on anything. Maybe you have a child with autism and you want to talk to other people who have children with autism, join a group. Then you can talk to other people and also get news and alerts about autism. If there isn’t already a group on the network, create one.

5. Blog for Your Friends and Family

Almost every social network offers you a blog. Here you can write about any number of things. Keep friends updated on your life or write about your concerns and accomplishments. A blog can be as personal, or impersonal, as you want it to be.

When you add photos to your blog you take it to a whole other level. People love to see what they’re reading about, that’s why newspapers hire photographers. The way your blog looks can be changed too.

6. Create Photo Albums and Share Photos

Add all your photos and break them into albums. Not all social networks offer photo albums, but many do. Sometimes the social network will only let you add a certain number of photos to your profile. Some will only let you create one photo album. If photo albums are important to you then you’ll need to shop around a little to find a social network that lets you add whole photo albums.

Photo albums are a great asset to your social network profile. People love to look at photos. They may stay on your profile, or come back later, just to look through your photos. It’s also a good idea if you have family that are far away and you want them to be able to see your family photos. Some social networks even offer the ability for you to turn your photo album into a slideshow.

Beyoncé usually spends a lot of time not talking about Jay-Z. Even magazines that tout some exclusive interview in which she’s finally opened up only have a snippet or two, and usually they are about her decision to not talk.

So you would have every reason to be wary when yet another magazine — this time Essence — comes along and claims that the singer has broken her infamous silence. Except in this case, she has.

After several pages about Beyoncé’s decision not to speak publicly about her private life — peppered with lots of so-called expert opinion from an associate professor of communications and anthropology, a blogger, an unnamed media insider, the singer’s acting coach and even her mother — the magazine finally gets down to business.

Up to this point, Beyoncé led the magazine to believe she wouldn’t be really opening up to them either: “Interviewing Beyoncé, who has admitted she dislikes the process, is a little like talking to your mother about sex. There may be a pretense of open communication, but the subtext is clear: Are you seriously going to ask me that? … For now, Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s relationship exists in that no-man’s land where they won’t give us anything and we can’t get enough.”

So at first, Essence settles for the usual discussion about her effort to maintain her privacy, which Beyoncé claims is so she can keep some mystery, stay sane and control her brand — though not necessarily in that order.

“I feel that, especially now, with the Internet and paparazzi and camera phones, it’s so difficult to maintain mystery,” she told the magazine. “And that’s so important. Even in a relationship, I feel like not being that accessible is really important. If you think about Prince or Michael Jackson, or any superstars, you couldn’t see them when they got off their planes or when they got out of the pool and didn’t comb their hair. It’s great that people see we’re not perfect. But it’s almost impossible to have superstars now, because people will never get enough. And it’s not even about my music. It’s about all the things that people imagine about me in their minds. But I can’t satisfy everyone. I know that Jay and I probably do inspire people. And I appreciate people feeling proud. But this is the only way I’ve been able to stay sane, so why would I start talking now?

“[Not speaking] controls your brand,” she continued. “It controls what you want to put out there and kind of forces people to talk about what you want them to talk about.”

But then Beyoncé lets it slip that it was a joint decision with her husband to keep quiet. “We decide everything,” she told the magazine. “My word is my word. What Jay and I have is real. It’s not about interviews or getting the right photo op. It’s real.”

But the writer persisted. And normally, this would be just the thing to get Beyoncé to shut down or call off the interview or find some excuse to change the subject. Instead, she groaned. “You’re gonna get me in trouble,” she complained, and then launched into a slew of details about the couple’s private wedding that the public has been craving for her to acknowledge — to the point that some have referred to it as a secret wedding, despite the very public-record nature of these things.

Beyoncé tells the magazine that the wedding was very small and intimate, because she’s not a “traditional” woman and having it be “her day” wasn’t something she needed. Being a star and walking the red carpet has diminished the need for that over the years. “It’s been my day so many days already,” she told the magazine.

She didn’t want an engagement ring because “people put too much emphasis on that. It’s just material, and it’s just silly to me,” she said.

Instead of just getting wedding rings, the couple also got matching tattoos of the Roman numeral four on their ring fingers, so if they take off the bands for work or to go swimming, a mark of some form is still there. (The number four is special to the couple because her birthday is September 4, his birthday is December 4, and their wedding anniversary is April 4.)

While she wouldn’t discuss how Hova proposed, or even if he proposed (”We’ve been together a long time. We always knew it would happen,” is all she would offer), Beyoncé did reveal this: They plan to have kids. Someday. And perhaps as soon as after she puts out this album.

Unfortunately, what they didn’t have is the contacts necessary to give them a fair shot at breaking into the industry. Arguably, it might have been smarter for them to start networking with the people that could launch their career before relocating. While they’re out here in Hollywood working tough jobs to keep food on the table, I hope you take the smarter route and start building your network before taking that plunge. The all-important industry people I’m talking about, are of course, the talent agents. Without an agent, you’ll have a slim to none chance of “being discovered” or ever getting work.

Reason for writing: “I took a good look at myself and realized that if God were to take me, I wanted my children to know what my thoughts were about the most important elements of this life. … This book is a bit of a peek through the keyholes of our various doorways, a reality check for those who think the rich and famous have it made.”

Hints of trouble: “By the time Britney and Kevin (Federline) split up in November 2006, she was in trouble. When she came home for Christmas with the babies, I could tell she was sad and restless. Plus she was losing her aunt Sandra (dying from cancer); we all were, and that added to her pain. What I didn’t know then was how much she was truly suffering.”

Parental challenges: “It was hard for me to believe this much-loved daughter (Britney), my very heart, was enduring such pain in her life, and I couldn’t be there beside her to help her heal.”

Biggest revelation: Jamie Lynn “handed me a folded note and asked me to read it in my room. When I unfolded the note, I read the words that would change all of our lives forever: ‘Mama, I’m pregnant. I’m going to keep the baby and everything is going to be okay.’ … ‘What about all of our talks?’ I cried to Jamie Lynn. ‘You told me you were a virgin!’ … I must be the most naive mother in the world, I thought.”

Surprising moment: “I’m not someone who cries in public, generally speaking, although lately that has changed a bit. That day (when Britney shaved her head in February 2007) I was devastated, broken by what had happened to my child.”

Overview: Baldwin, 50, talks about the need to reform family law and divorce litigation in the context of his split from ex-wife Kim Basinger, 54, and their custody battle for daughter Ireland, 12.

Reason for writing: “I would not have written this book if I felt that my experiences were isolated. … There is … enough injustice, inefficiency, and corruption within the system to compel us as a society to closely examine what is being perpetrated on innocent men and women.”

Hints of trouble: “Kim said she was pregnant. A moment that one would have imagined … would be a cause for unprecedented joy was more like someone telling you that they had wrecked your car. … We all just stood there while Kim talked of her doubts about me and our marriage. … In hindsight, the alienation from my daughter began that afternoon, before she was even born.”

Parental challenges: “My daughter’s phone would go straight to voice mail, indicating that it was not even turned on. … I could only get my daughter on the phone for fewer than 25% of the court-ordered calls.”

Biggest revelation: (After a voice mail in which he berated his daughter came out.) “Driving up the Taconic Parkway, heading to an inn in the Berkshire Mountains, I began to think about what little town I would repair to in order to commit suicide. What semiremote Massachusetts state park could I hike deep into and shoot myself? What bed-and-breakfast could I check into and overdose?”

Surprising moment: “When I reached my attorney, Vicki Greene, she informed me that her office had just been notified by the California Department of Child Services that an anonymous source had filed a child abuse claim against me. … Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine I would find myself in this position.”

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actress Hilary Swank underwent surgery to remove a benign growth, and the two-time Oscar winner is recuperating from the procedure, a spokesman said on Thursday.

“She was experiencing some discomfort and went to see her doctor, who prescribed an immediate course of action that included a brief hospitalization to remove a small, benign growth,” the star’s manager, Jason Weinberg, said in a statement.

“Her condition has been resolved, and there are no continuing health issues, with the exception of some short-term rest and recuperation,” Weinberg said.

He declined to give further details on the procedure.

Swank, 34, won Oscars for her roles in the 2004 Clint Eastwood boxing movie “Million Dollar Baby” and the 1999 transgender drama “Boys Don’t Cry.”

She stars in the upcoming movie “Amelia,” based on the life of pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart.

LL Cool J began his swan song with Def Jam as the rapper debuted at number 9 on the Billboard 200 moving nearly 44,000 copies of Exit 13. The album is his last contractually-bound project for the storied label.

The veteran rapper had been outspoken regarding his disdain with the label. Most of his venom, however, was directed at then Def Jam president Jay-Z. LL infamously lashed out at Hov on the red carpet at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards when he made the rift public as he announced an alliance with 50 Cent.

LL, though, hasn’t spoken in detail about his next move. The rapper told XXLmag.com last month he wasn’t interested in being courted by labels like a new artist.

“I’m not interested in that free agent non-sense,” he explained. “I’m a businessman, but I’m not looking for that. That’s now where I’m at with this. This is more about just making history and just making great music. As far as free agency and running around, the thought of me running around taking meetings with record company labels is laughable.”

In addition to LL, a number of rappers cracked the Top 10 of the Billboard 200.

Todd Smith’s Def Jam counterpart Young Jeezy is locked in the number two spot. The Atlanta rapper slid just one spot from last week when his latest LP, The Recession, held the top spot. Jeezy pushed almost 90,000 copies of his project.

The Game continues to do well. The Compton rapper is at number seven with L.A.X. The album sold 49,000 copies in its third week, pushing the total sales to just over 377,000 units.

As the story has been for weeks now, Lil Wayne is still dominating the charts. The Cash Money star owns property in the Top 10 as he 14 weeks after the release of his latest, Tha Carter III, he’s going strong, notching the number eight position. The LP sold over 47,000 copies and has a total of 2.4 million copies sold to date.
